Has anybody ever gotten excited about a potential domain name sale that never happened? You are not alone because that is the nature of the industry. Whenever you don’t expect to make sale you do and when expect one you don’t. Although not fun, every domainer should be prepared to handle emotional ups and downs. Domaining is no exact science and it never will be. There have been many times that I received an offer through my domain sales only to find that the offer was bogus. However, exciting deals via email the never materialize are even worse. The probles is that sellers want to sell for a good price while most buyers will either fish for a price or try to lowball you. The worst buyers are the ones that have to ask their “friends” about a sail. When the good old friend gets involved, you can kiss any type of good sale goodbye.

Although both are not exactly new, social software like blogs and wikis are turning people’s heads all over the Internet and even in the mainstream media. Of the two, blogs are more known and have grabbed more attention on the news with politics and in magazines like Time. Blogs were covered in an earlier On The Radar column here.

What in the world is a wiki? Unlike “blog” which is short for weblog, the term “wiki” was created in 1995 by a programmer from Oregon named Ward Cunningham. He got the term from wiki wiki, which means “quick” in Hawaiian. According to Webopedia.com, a wiki is:

“A collaborative Web site comprised of the perpetual collective work of many authors. Similar to a blog in structure and logic, a wiki allows anyone to edit, delete or modify content that has been placed on the Web site using a browser interface, including the work of previous authors. In contrast, a blog, typically authored by an individual, does not allow visitors to change the original posted material, only add comments to the original content.”

Basically, a wiki is a completely interactive website where visitors of a common interest can help shape a website together. This type of interactivity should find a great home in both business and education. With a wiki, students can work together on school assignments and companies can work on projects together as one. Wikis would also work well with online clubs, clans, or any closely knit community. For example, one wiki has built an entire encyclopedia at Wikipedia and it’s still going strong.

The possibilities are huge for wiki, but there is one obvious pitfall that cannot be ignored. Simply put, complete interactivity can be bad if just one jerk comes along and destroys every thing a group has worked on. Due to this, some wikis do not permit anonymous edits and are known as fishbowls. I also noticed that completely open wikis log your IP whenever you make an edit.

So what does all this mean to domainers? It means that there is good news and bad news. The good news is that wiki domains are not nearly in demand as blog domains yet. However, the bad news is that wiki is not totally undiscovered either. There are still some nice word combos available but forget about buying “wiki” or wikis” in any halfway decent extension. Also, forget about registering the next BlogHosting.com because both WikiHosting.com and WikiHost.com are already taken. Although not completely accurate due to being a part of a few unrelated words, typing in “wiki” at Whois Source will yield over 1500 names that are or were taken while “blog” will yield at least 24,000 names. Like I said, that is not completely accurate but it gives you some idea of how popular blog domains are compared to wiki domains.

by Chris Connor

Different domainers look for different things when buying domain names. Some domainers choose names for future development while others buy domains with potential customers already in mind. A third and ever growing group of domainers search high and low for domains with existing traffic. With existing traffic, you can park your domains at places like Sedo and Fabulous.com in order to establish a steady income stream. In fact, some domainers are even able to live off the income from their domains. That said, domains with significant traffic usually command high premiums among resellers.

How do you find domains that have traffic? There are a few ways to get an idea how much traffic a certain domain name may have, but not really a fool proof way unless you buy one and track the stats on it. Since traffic comes from either links or type-ins, you will probably get a great idea which to look for by simply looking at the name. For example, a domain like LabPuppy.com is not one that a person will automatically type-in looking for specific content but this domain happens to have a substantial amount of links. Thus, you would use tools such as http://www.marketleap.com/publinkpop/ to find out how many links, Alexa.com to see if the domain still has a traffic ranking, and PageRank.net to see if the domain has a Google PageRank or not. If the domain is generic like GameChat.com, you would go to http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/ and type in the individual terms (or term) together and the domain name. Using the GameChat.com example, the terms “Game Chat” yielded 5923 results while GameChat.com yielded 55 results. What this means is that Game Chat was searched for 5923 times last month on Overture while the exact domain was typed-in 55 times on Overture. In theory, you could expect at least 55 type-ins per month for that domain just using the domain results. A fraction of the 5923 could have typed-in the domain as well before searching for it on Overture.

However, domainers should be extremely careful when buying domain names solely for traffic. Although the tools mentioned above are helpful, they can leave a lot of room for misleading potential buyers. For instance, I once bought two “traffic” domains because they had Overture results for the exact domain name. When I put those two domains on Sedo, I learned that neither one had traffic. Apparently in this case, domainers had been typing in both domains just to check stats on them. Furthermore, a domain with a ton of links does not automatically mean a ton of traffic if the links are on dead sites or in a place where nobody ever goes to. Even a high ranking on Alexa.com or a high Google PageRank do not single handedly guarantee a great amount of traffic. Short of having actual stats from the domain, the best way to see if a domain has a good deal of traffic or not is to use all of these tools together as your primary guide to making a decision. If one indicator is high while the others are low or nonexistent, be very skeptical.

Recently, a “traffic” domain dealer was exposed on a major domain forum for misleading other domainers in buying traffic names with very little traffic. A few domainers were even tricked out of hundreds of dollars because they thought they were buying domains that would yield steady income. The person in question went so far as to change his or her membership name a couple of times in order avoid a bad reputation from the members that were duped. Thankfully, that tactic did not work because the member was permanently banned from the forum. Thus, always keep this incident in mind when buying domains that are supposed to have traffic.

Sedo is involved in both domain parking and domain brokering. This dual role acts like a double edged sword as far as parking is concerned. On one hand it is great that you have the ability to earn income and sell your domains at the same place. On the other, you feel that you could make even more income if Sedo focused on parking as much as Domain Sponsor does. For example, a CPM (cost per thousand impressions) rate along with pay-per-clicks would make Sedo unbeatable as a domain parking service.

Domain Radar’s Rating (out of 5 stars): ****1/2

Pros
• pays via PayPal
• parking there also help with selling your domains
• uses a keyword expert to improve the advertising on your parked pages
• allows potential buyers to see how many hits a certain name averages per day

Cons
• you get paid for clicks only
• not as focused on parking as DomainSponsor

The Verdict - The best place to park your domains if you are looking for both income and the possibility of selling your names.

Since some radars can be high-tech, lets start with a high-tech twist. When an innovative technology starts to receive mainstream coverage, any decent domains containing that technology are snapped up quickly. The latest technology that fits this description is RFID. RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification and is one of the most exciting consumer technologies in quite some time.

The best part is that RFID is already in widespread use! You can use RFID at places like Exxon and Mobile gas stations (go to speedpass.com for more info) now but that is only the beginning. You can also find it at McDonalds and you will eventually be able to at Walmart as well. You may even find it on products by Procter Gamble and Revlon in the future.

How does RFID work? You sign up for an account with your credit card. You then receive a key tag that corresponds to that account. To buy something, you simply wave your key tag over a tag reader and, presto, your all set. At McDonalds, you will be able to use the key tag inside and at the drive-thru.

Since this emerging technology is far from being a secret, the best domains using RFID have been taken. In fact, a few domainers have going on buying binges of RFID names. According to DeletedDomains.com, over 400 domains containing RFID have been registered in the past two months.

If your planning your own website, then your really need to consider getting your own domain name.

They aren’t free but if your serious about building your own corporate or on line presence the a domain name is one of the best investments you can make.

The Domain Name System or DNS allows for computers to translate a series of numerical numbers in human friendly names. Names are easy to remember and therefore help to locate your website.

A domain name is part of the address of a website and is known by the technical term URL or Uniform Resource Locator.

Domain names are limited by international conventions and can not exceed 63 characters, certain characters are also not allowed.

What are the steps to register a domain name?

First - Select your domain name, ideally this needs to be either your company or websites name.

Secondly - Check if its free. Most domain name registrars including www.discountdomainsuk.com offer a WHOIS service. Consider registering the other Top Level Domain extensions, e.g .com and .co.uk if your UK based.

Thirdly - Register your domain name. As you register your domain name or names it is always worth giving thought to where your website will be hosted, some registrars and hosting companies expect you to purchase both services.
It can be more expensive to change your mind later on.

Lastly maintain your domain name. If you change your e-mail address etc, do not forget to update your account with the registrar, otherwise when renewal comes around you could overlook your domain names expiry.

———————————————

RegisterFly is a perfect example of a registrar trying to be all things to all people. For a while, this formula drove away domainers in droves since buying and selling domains there was much too complicated and risky. Risky? Yes, RegisterFly used to require the password of the account that a domain was pushed to! That means that the buyer had to give you his user name and password. That’s right, all the info needed to log into somebody else’s account and do major damage. Of course the only way around this was to create a dummy account, push the name into that and then give the user info for that account to the seller. Trust me, it was not easy. Thankfully, all that has been done away with since RegisterFly has finally implemented a simple push system. To improve even more, the registrar now supports payments via PayPal.

When talking about RegisterFly, its hard to ignore its most unique feature, its automated Domain Marketplace. The novelty of this feature is that it bypasses everything and allows you to purchase a used domain whenever you want. Don’t like haggling with sellers or dealing with escrow services that take too long? That is not a problem here. You can also find bargains by grabbing domains close to their expiration dates and then immediately renewing them.

However, the Domain MarketPlace also acts like a double-edged sword for RegisterFly since it is also one of the biggest negatives about the registrar. Whether you are a seller or just a domain holder, the MarketPlace can mean that you might lose one or more of your domains without knowing it until it’s too late. For a seller, you could put one of your names up for sale and then forget about it after a long enough period. With some sites that allow you to post your domains for sale that is not a problem. At RegisterFly, your sales price decreases gradually over time so it will be extremely cheap near its expiration date. I have seen sale prices go into the negatives for this very reason. To try to combat this problem, Registerfly now gives the option of setting a minimum selling price. For some unsuspecting domain holders, though, that might not be enough. Let’s say you just bought a name that is being held at RegisterFly. Without you knowing it, the previous owner had listed the name he just sold to you on the MarketPlace. A few days later, another buyer sees that domain on the MarketPlace and buys it. What can you do? Not much except always check to see if any names that you buy at RegisterFly are listed for sale. All that said, RegisterFly has made some wise moves to improve customer retention, but it still needs to work out a few kinks with some of its top features.

Domain Radar’s Rating (out of 5 stars): ***1/2

Pros
• now support payments via PayPal
• domain marketplace allows customers to buy used domains instantly
• push feature has been simplified
• offers different specials on a regular basis

Cons
• $9.99 for new registrations is pricey compared to other cheap registrars
• you can lose your domain to the domain marketplace if you forget you listed it or the person you bought it from has it listed
• interface is a little cluttered
• offers too many useless services like appraisals

The Verdict - Improving registrar with a very unique feature.
